Breaking the Chains of Modern Ignorance: The Path of Awakening
How the system of Imamate and the profound lessons of Ashura offer a roadmap to confront the world's intellectual and spiritual darkness.
Throughout history, divine prophets, sages, and religious leaders have shared three fundamental missions: to confront ignorance (jahl), to overcome foolishness (jahalat), and to dismantle the age of ignorance (jahiliyyah).
Today, these concepts are not just historical artefacts—they are the keys to understanding and resisting the modern system of global domination. True confrontation with today’s systemic oppression is impossible without the guiding principles of the Imamate. In this light, the mourning ceremonies of Ashura for Imam Husayn (AS) must go beyond mere sorrow; they must become a profound field of awakening, epic action, and resistance.
Here is a breakdown of the three fronts of this spiritual and intellectual battle.
1. Knowledge: The Antidote to Ignorance (Jahl)
Ignorance is humanity’s most ancient enemy. The more it takes root—whether it is ignorance about oneself, others, religious rulings, or God—the further a society falls backward. Ignorance is the root cause of many human conflicts.
The cure is straightforward: knowledge. A faithful society must define its relationship with learning. As Islamic tradition advises, one should strive to be a scholar, a learner, or at least a lover of knowledge. The Holy Prophet (S) declared, “I was sent only as a teacher,” and the Quran frequently emphasises the prophetic duty to recite divine verses, purify the people, and teach them wisdom. The primary duty of scholars and leaders is to guide society out of the darkness of ignorance and into the light of knowledge.
2. Self-Cultivation: The Battle Against Foolishness (Jahalat)
There is a distinct difference between jahl (lack of knowledge) and jahalat (foolishness). Foolishness relates directly to the realm of self-cultivation.
The human soul possesses immense, often untapped, potential—so much so that humanity was entrusted with a divine responsibility. If a society surrenders to carnal vices like arrogance, envy, malice, extremism, and backbiting, it regresses. Correcting this requires profound inner cultivation.
As the great scholars note, the Holy Quran is “God’s banquet,” but just as an unhealthy stomach cannot digest rich food, an unhealthy soul cannot benefit from divine guidance. We must maintain our spiritual health through conscious will.
The golden rule of leadership: You cannot build others until you build yourself. The best form of governance is governance over the self—mastery over our eyes, ears, tongues, and desires. If human faculties of desire and anger are left unchecked by intellect and cultivation, the result is societal savagery.
3. The Modern “Age of Ignorance” (Jahiliyyah)
The third mission is confronting the jahiliyyah, which does not simply mean “not knowing.” The age of ignorance occurs when uncontrolled human desires and anger dominate society and governance.
When governance is stripped of rationality and spiritual cultivation, it drives society toward destruction. The Quran warns against displaying the behaviours of the “former age of ignorance,” implying that a “latter” age of ignorance could emerge. Islamic traditions suggest that in the end times, this modern ignorance will be even more severe than the idolatry of the past. Why? Because the modern age of ignorance arms itself with elegant but deceptive rhetoric.
The Illusion of Modern Human Rights
Today, the world hears endless rhetoric about human rights and values. Yet, these modern frameworks often view humanity strictly through a material and sensory lens, entirely neglecting the intellectual and intuitive dimensions of the human soul.
If humanity is defined solely by material desires, human rights literature can never bring true dignity. The hypocrisy of international organisations is glaring: while they chant slogans of human rights, horrific crimes and injustices unfold in places like Gaza, met only with silence or complicity.
Excessiveness and Bullying: Symptoms of a Sick System
When the faculty of desire dominates global governance, it breeds excessiveness. Arrogant global powers are never satisfied; they view their insatiable greed as an inherent right. When the faculty of anger dominates, it breeds global bullying and extortion.
In this modern system of ignorance, the very meaning of words is inverted:
War is framed as “peace.”
Aggression is labeled “defence.”
Injustice is masked as “justice.”
These oppressive systems twist reality so entirely that the oppressor manages to present themselves as the victim, and the debtor acts as the creditor of humanity.
The Path Forward: The Centrality of the Imamate
History shows that people often adopt the morality of their rulers. When governments normalise indulgence, self-interest, and bullying, justice and human dignity fade from the public mind.
How do we break out of this modern age of ignorance? Traditions state,
“Whoever dies without knowing the Imam of his time has died the death of the age of ignorance.”
The system of Imamate is the central axis for rising out of this darkness.
By deeply engaging with the teachings of the AhlulBayt (AS) and transforming our mourning for Imam Husayn (AS) into an active resistance against oppression, we can cultivate our intellect, nurture our souls, and stand firmly against the deceptive, ruthless systems of modern global dominance.
