In his weekly moral lesson, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli congratulated those present on the anniversary of the events of November 4th and honoured the memory of the martyrs of that day.
The Quran as the Foundation of Life
Speaking about the qualities of those close to God, the Ayatollah quoted the words of the Righteous Leader, Imam Ali (AS):
“Through them, the Scripture is understood, and through it, they gain knowledge. Through them, the Scripture is established, and through it, they themselves stand firm.”
He explained that these people build their lives on the Quran and help society live according to its teachings.
The Responsibility of Religious Seminaries and Universities
In order for the Quran to become the foundation of knowledge and to determine how society functions, much depends on religious seminaries and universities. The responsibility lies with all of us, but first and foremost with religious scholars and representatives of the academic community. They must help people understand the Quran and apply its teachings in practice, and they themselves must be guided by it in their actions.
Ayatollah Javadi Amoli emphasised that the meaning of the Quran goes far beyond reading it for reward.
“The Quran is a book that should be studied,” he said. “It teaches us how the world is structured, who created it, and what the universe is based on. Everything in it, down to the smallest particle, is created with knowledge and measure. Every phenomenon has its cause, and it can be investigated.”
He gave the example of an agronomist’s work: “In order for a garden to bear fruit, it needs the right soil, seeds, water, and the necessary conditions. Each tree has its own requirements. Similarly, all human sciences draw knowledge from the world that God has provided for humans to study. Therefore, the world itself is God’s book.”
How to Study the Quran
It is not enough to read the Quran only on Friday nights for reward. Each of us should have a plan for studying it. Just as we have regular classes, we can set aside time to read the entire Quran and discuss it. One can start with the general meaning of the verses, trying to understand what the Quran wants to tell us, and then refer to commentaries as needed.
Speaking about his renowned Tasnim commentary, the Ayatollah recalled that four generations of scholars worked on it for about forty years. Each generation spent about ten years raising new questions and seeking answers to them, drawing on the experience of religious seminaries and universities.
“Even after all this work, what has been written is just a drop in the ocean of the Quran,” he noted. “It is important that each of us reads and studies it.”
The Victory of Truth: A Quranic Promise
Wherever there is a struggle between truth and falsehood, the Quran teaches us that, ultimately, truth prevails. Falsehood may rise up against it, but it is not destined to achieve final victory. Allah affirms truth and nullifies falsehood. This is the general law of the universe.
Ayatollah Javadi Amoli reminded the audience of the attacks in which the Leader-martyr, scholars, civilians, and Basij fighters were killed, specifically mentioning the children of Minab.
“The enemy attacked us, inflicted damage, and took the lives of dear people,” he said. “But we must remember Allah’s promise. The defeat of the United States and ‘Israel’ is inevitable. The Quran calls on those who stand on the side of truth not to succumb to fear and doubt. This is a law that the Almighty has established in the world. The victory of truth, the success of Islam, and the Muslims – are certain.”
Islam Cultivates Courage and Nobility
“Islam calls for the cultivation of courageous and noble people who are capable of fighting and defending their land,” the Ayatollah stated.
He referred to traditions from Imam Baqir (AS) and Imam Sadiq (AS) about how Imam Ali (AS) taught to resist aggressors. Applying these teachings to current events, he declared: “If the enemy attacks your land, you must resist. If the United States and ‘Israel’ invade your country, kill the invaders. I take responsibility for their blood.”
Speaking about vigilance in defence, he quoted a letter from Imam Ali (AS) to the soldiers:
“Take only the smallest amount of sleep, as if rinsing your mouth with water.”
Ayatollah Javadi Amoli explained that a fasting person, when rinsing their mouth, makes sure not to swallow the water. Similarly, a soldier on duty must remain vigilant and allow themselves only the shortest sleep when necessary.
He added that each of us has a duty to preserve this system. This applies to public morality, the economy, providing people with what they need, and creating jobs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli expressed hope that, thanks to the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), the Islamic system will preserve its dignity and strength and will be passed on to Imam Mahdi (AS), and that hostile plots will be thwarted. He asked Allah to grant the society and all those present the honour and dignity that the Quran teaches, and to resurrect the martyrs of the Revolution and the defenders of Islam together with the martyrs of Karbala.
