On International Women's Day: Martyr Ayatollah Khamenei's Critique of Women's Status in the West
As the world observes International Women's Day, an analysis of the Iranian Supreme Leader's arguments regarding the treatment and objectification of women in Western societies.
In a compilation of speeches spanning over two decades, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei offers a harsh critique of the Western discourse surrounding women. The video presents his argument that Western societies, far from liberating women, actively humiliate, oppress, and objectify them. Ayatollah Khamenei contends that the West owes the world an explanation for its treatment of women, asserting that its fundamental policies degrade female dignity under the guise of freedom.
The Duality of the Western Approach
Ayatollah Khamenei identifies two primary dimensions in the West’s approach to women, both of which he considers detrimental. First, he argues that the West attempts to impose a “masculine identity” on women. Second, and more prominently featured in his critique, is the assertion that Western culture reduces women to tools for male sexual pleasure. He argues that this objectification ranges from visual gratification to more severe forms of exploitation.
According to Ayatollah Khamenei, this is not a recent development but a “fundamental, strategic policy” deeply ingrained in Western society. He claims that this strategy actively promotes moral corruption and the commodification of women.
A Culture of Immodesty and Capitalist Exploitation
The video highlights Ayatollah Khamenei’s view that Western society rewards immodesty. He argues that in the West, “the less a woman covers herself in that society, the more appropriate they consider it to be.” He contrasts this with formal expectations for men, noting that while men are expected to be fully clothed in formal attire, women are often expected to expose major parts of their bodies in similar settings.
To illustrate the degrading nature of this culture, Ayatollah Khamenei cites an example of a famous American businessman who owned chain restaurants and mandated that his female employees wear skirts of a specific, short length. He uses this “evil capitalist logic” as evidence that Western systems trample upon and destroy women’s dignity, turning them into mere tools for profit and attraction. He further argues that when this culture becomes prevalent, women themselves may fail to realise they are being used and may even take pride in their objectification.
Patriarchy Disguised as Freedom
A central theme of Ayatollah Khamenei’s argument is the hypocrisy he perceives in Western values. He points out that while Western nations often create an uproar when Islamic practices, like the hijab, are mandated, they remain silent when immodesty or hyper-sexuality (such as polyamory or hookup culture, as shown in the video’s cutaways) are promoted.
Ultimately, Ayatollah Khamenei concludes that the Western model is not true freedom for women, but rather “patriarchy” and “freedom for men.” He argues that the system is designed to persuade women to uncover and exhibit themselves primarily so that men are free to indulge their lust. The video ends with a call for the Western world to be held accountable for undermining women’s true value and betraying them in the name of support.
