Insights from the Ninth Imam on earning affection, repenting sincerely, avoiding regret, and attaining God's pleasure.
As we approach the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Jawad (AS), let us reflect on the profound wisdom he imparted. Despite our inability to directly access the infallible Imam (AS) during the occultation, we are blessed with the treasure of his teachings, ready to nourish our souls. Known as a second Jesus and the wonder of the Prophet’s Household (AS), Imam Jawad (AS) offers invaluable guidance on various aspects of life.
Earning Affection
When asked about the secret to being liked by others and winning people’s affection, Imam Jawad (AS) advised:
"Friendship is earned by having three traits: being fair in interactions, sharing in other people’s joy and sorrow, and having a pure heart (free from sins)." He further added, "Whoever is pious (vigilant about their actions), will inevitably be loved by the people, even if those people themselves lack piety." (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 75, p.79; Kashf al-Ghummah, vol. 2, p. 349)
True Repentance
For those burdened by sin and seeking true repentance, Imam Jawad (AS) explained:
"True repentance stands on four pillars: heartfelt regret, seeking forgiveness with the tongue, correcting one’s actions, and firmly deciding not to repeat the sin." (Irshad al-Qulub by al-Daylami, p.160)
Avoiding Regret
Addressing the common feeling of regret over past actions, Imam Jawad (AS) taught:
"There are three characteristics that if one possesses them, he/she won’t regret his/her actions: Avoiding haste, Consulting with others for one’s decisions, And trusting in God once a person makes a decision." (Al-Fusul al-Muhimmah, pp.274-275)
Earning God's Pleasure
When asked how to make God pleased, Imam Jawad (AS) revealed:
"There are three traits that if one possesses these traits, he/she will earn God’s satisfaction: Frequent repentance (seeking forgiveness), Keeping company with good people, And giving abundant charity." (Al-Fusul al-Muhimmah, pp.274-275)
A Final Piece of Advice
In a final piece of advice, Imam Jawad (AS) cautioned:
"... Know that you are never outside God’s sight. So be mindful of the state you are in." (Tuhaf al-’Uqul, p.726)
This serves as a constant reminder to remain vigilant and conscious of our actions in every moment.
