The Quran's Profound Explanation of Life's Purpose
Discover the divine wisdom behind our existence, as revealed in the Quranic verses.
The Quran offers profound insights into the purpose of life, addressing fundamental questions about our creation, existence, and ultimate destiny. These verses provide guidance and clarity, inviting reflection on our role in the grand scheme of the universe.
The Reason for Our Creation
The Quran emphasises that we were not created without a purpose. (Quran, Surah al-Mu'minun, Chapter 23, The Believers, Verse 115) asks,
"Did you then think that We had created you without purpose, and that you would never be returned to Us?"
This verse underscores that our existence is intentional and that we will be held accountable for our actions.
The Test of Life
Life is presented as a test to determine who among us excels in good deeds. (Quran, Surah Al-Mulk, Chaper 67, The Kingdom, Verse 2) states,
"He is the One Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving."
This verse highlights that our actions and conduct in this world are of utmost importance.
The Transitory Nature of Worldly Life
The Quran reminds us that worldly life is temporary and should not be our ultimate focus. (Quran, Surah Ghafir, Chapter 40, The Believer, Verse 39) proclaims,
"O my people! This worldly life is only a fleeting enjoyment, whereas the Hereafter is truly the home of settlement."
This verse encourages us to prioritise the eternal life over the fleeting pleasures of this world.
The Essence of Worship
The primary purpose of our creation is to worship Allah. (Quran, Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Chapter 51, The Scatterers, Verse 56) states,
"I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me."
This verse clarifies that our lives should be dedicated to recognising, acknowledging, and submitting to the divine will.
Creation with Purpose
The Quran negates the idea that the creation of the heavens and the earth was a mere sport or amusement. (Quran, Surah Ad-Dukhan, Chapter 44, The Smoke, Verse 38-39) asserts,
"We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything in between for sport. We only created them for a purpose, but most of these ‘pagans’ do not know."
This emphasises the intentionality and wisdom behind creation.
Human Authority on Earth
The Quran also addresses the role of humans as stewards of the earth. (Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, Chapter 2, The Cow, Verse 30) recounts when Allah informed the angels of His plan to place a successive human authority on earth. This verse highlights the responsibility and potential for both good and corruption that come with human existence.
The Delusion of Enjoyment
Finally, the Quran cautions against being deluded by the allure of worldly life. (Quran, Surah Al-Hadid, Chapter 57, The Iron, Verse 20) describes worldly life as play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children, ultimately leading to regret. This verse serves as a reminder to seek true fulfilment in the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of good deeds.
