The Soldier and the Cleric - Chapter 2
How Ayatollah Khamenei and the Army Secured the Revolution’s Future
In the volatile final days of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the fate of Iran hung on a single question: where would the military’s loyalty lie? While many revolutionary factions called for the total dismantling of the Shah’s Imperial Army, a different vision was emerging—one that saw the military not as an enemy of the people, but as its future shield.
A Historic Handshake
The turning point arrived on February 8, 1979. In a daring act of defiance, a large contingent of Air Force personnel traded their civilian clothes for military uniforms inside the Alavi School compound. In a scene that would become etched in Iranian history, they raised their hands in a military salute to Imam Khomeini, acknowledging him as their new commander-in-chief.
Witnessing this transition was a young Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. As a cleric deeply involved in the revolutionary turmoil, he recognised the profound significance of this moment. It was the first tangible proof that the revolutionaries could trust and count on the existing military structure to stabilise a nation on the brink of chaos.
Resisting the Push for Dissolution
The victory of the Revolution on February 11 did not immediately end the internal strife. Left-wing groups, including the Fadayeen-e-Khalq and the MKO, began a vocal campaign for the complete dissolution of the army, viewing it as a remnant of the old regime.
However, Imam Khomeini and Ayatollah Khamenei stood firm. They believed that a sovereign nation required a professional, organized military to defend its borders and its new political identity. This commitment was solidified with the appointment of Major General Qarani, a revolutionary commander, as the head of the Joint Staff of the Revolutionary Army.
Investing in the Future
The task of rebuilding was immense. The new leadership focused on:
Empowering Young Officers: Shifting the focus from the old guard to a new generation of patriotic leaders.
Countering Extremism: Protecting labour movements and factories from being hijacked by communist factions.
Ideological Alignment: Ensuring the military’s values reflected the goals of the Islamic Republic.
Ayatollah Khamenei’s presence alongside the troops—often seen in the “uniform of the soldier”—symbolised a bridge between the religious leadership and the armed forces. His advocacy for a strong, independent army helped transform the former Imperial Force into a modern defensive power.
