The story of Prophet Ayyub, as mentioned in the Quran, is one of the most profound examples of patience (sabr), gratitude (shukr), and unwavering faith in Allah. Despite facing unimaginable trials, Ayyub remained steadfast in his devotion to Allah, teaching us invaluable lessons about trust, perseverance, and reliance on Allah during both ease and hardship.
The Life of Prophet Ayyub
1. A Blessed Life
Prophet Ayyub was a man of great wealth, health, and status. He was blessed with abundant livestock, vast lands, a large family, and a respected position in his community. Despite his wealth and blessings, Ayyub was deeply humble and grateful to Allah. He used his wealth to help the poor, free slaves, and serve his community, always remembering that everything he had was a gift from Allah.
2. The Angels’ Praise
One day, the angels in heaven began discussing the best of humans on earth. An angel said, “The best creature on earth today is Ayyub, a man of noble character who displays great patience and always remembers his Lord. He is an excellent model for the worshippers of Allah. In return, his Lord has blessed him with a long life and plenty of servants; he feeds and clothes the poor and buys slaves to set them free. He makes those who receive his charity feel as if they are favouring him, so kind and gentle is he.”
3. Shaitan’s Plot
Shaitan (Iblis), overhearing this praise, became envious and angry. He vowed to lead Ayyub astray. Shaitan whispered evil thoughts to Ayyub, trying to tempt him with worldly pleasures, but Ayyub remained firm in his faith. Frustrated, Shaitan approached Allah and claimed that Ayyub only worshipped Him because of his wealth and blessings. He said, “If You remove his wealth, then You will find that his tongue will no longer mention Your name, and his praying will stop.”
Allah, the All-Knowing, knew the sincerity of Ayyub’s heart but allowed this test to demonstrate his unwavering faith. He granted Shaitan permission to test Ayyub.
The Trials of Ayyub:
1. Loss of Wealth
Shaitan began his attack by destroying Ayyub’s wealth. His livestock died, his lands were ruined, and his servants abandoned him. Despite losing everything, Ayyub remained patient and continued to praise Allah, saying, “Allah gives whom He wills, and Allah takes from whom He wills. And all of the wealth that I have belongs to Allah, so He has every authority to take it back from me.”
2. Loss of Health
When Shaitan saw that Ayyub remained steadfast, he intensified the trial. Ayyub was struck with a severe illness that left him in constant pain. His body became weak, and he was abandoned by many of his friends and relatives. Only his devoted wife, Rahma, stayed by his side, caring for him and supporting him through his suffering.
3. Shaitan’s Temptation
Shaitan, disguised as an old man, approached Ayyub and tried to sow doubt in his heart. He said, “All your wealth is lost. Some people say it is because you gave too much charity and wasted your time with continuous prayers to Allah. Others say Allah has brought this upon you to please your enemies. If Allah had the capacity to prevent harm, He would have protected your wealth.”
Ayyub replied with unwavering faith,
“Allah gives whom He wills, and Allah takes from whom He wills. And all of the wealth that I have belongs to Allah, so He has every authority to take it back from me.”
He continued to praise and thank Allah, refusing to let Shaitan shake his faith.
Ayyub’s Prayer and Allah’s Mercy
After years of enduring hardship, Ayyub finally turned to Allah in supplication. He said,
“Verily, Satan has touched me with distress (by losing my health) and torment (by losing my wealth).” (Quran Surah Al-Anbiya (Chapter of the Prophets) Verse 83)
Allah immediately answered his prayer. He restored Ayyub’s health, wealth, and family. Ayyub and his wife, Rahma, were blessed with 28 children—14 boys and 14 girls. His life became even more prosperous and blessed than before.
