The Story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and the Angel of Death
How the Righteous and the Wicked Meet Their End
One day, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) expressed his desire to see the Angel of Death in his true form.
Curious, he asked, "O Angel of Death, show me how you appear when taking the soul of a righteous believer."
In an instant, a breathtaking sight unfolded before him. Standing before Ibrahim (AS) was a radiant young man, more handsome than any he had ever seen. His luminous white robes glowed with purity, and a heavenly fragrance—unlike anything on earth—filled the air.
Overwhelmed by the beauty before him, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) said, "If a pious soul had no other joy at the moment of death except seeing you in this form, it would be enough!"
Then, he asked, "Now, show me how you appear when taking the soul of a wicked sinner."
The Angel of Death replied, "O Ibrahim, you cannot bear it. You will not endure the sight."
But Prophet Ibrahim (AS) insisted.
Finally, the Angel of Death said, "Turn your face away."
Ibrahim (AS) averted his gaze. Then, the angel instructed him to look.
When he turned back, a terrifying figure loomed before him—a monstrous, pitch-black giant whose head touched the heavens and whose feet stood upon the earth. His long, wild hair was like flames, and his body emitted a putrid stench that made the air unbearable. Fire roared from his nostrils and ears, and his entire form was covered in writhing figures of men, their faces contorted in agony as flames consumed them.
The horrifying sight struck Prophet Ibrahim (AS) with such terror that he fainted. When he awoke, shaken and humbled, he said, "If a sinful soul had no other punishment at death except seeing you in this form, it would be more than enough!"
Thus, the Angel of Death treats the righteous with honor, greeting them with kindness: "O friend of Allah, the Almighty sends His peace upon you."
