The Unseen Bridge: A Master's Gratitude for a Midnight Prayer
How Mirza Javad Tabrizi perceived the spiritual gifts sent to him by an ordinary student in the dead of night.
In the bustling seminaries of Qom, relationships between grand masters and novice students usually follow a strict hierarchy of respect. The student seeks out the master, asks for guidance, and humbles themselves at their feet. But for a spiritual giant like Mirza Javad Maliki Tabrizi, the true hierarchy was not based on age or scholarly rank—it was based on the purity of the heart.
The Unexpected Visit One day, after finishing a heavy and exhausting lecture, Mirza Javad did not retreat to his home to rest. Instead, accompanied by a close companion, he walked over to the Dar al-Shafa School, a residence for ordinary religious students.
He navigated the corridors until he reached the modest, small room of a particular young student. Knocking on the door, the grand master entered. The student was undoubtedly shocked to see the great mystic standing in his doorway. Mirza Javad sat with him for a while, spoke to him with immense warmth and appreciation, thanked him profoundly, and then quietly took his leave.
The Revelation of Grace His companion, thoroughly confused by this break in protocol, couldn’t hold back his curiosity. As they walked away, he asked Mirza Javad why a scholar of his towering rank had gone out of his way to visit and thank an unknown, junior student.
Mirza Javad’s answer pulled back the veil on how a spiritually awakened heart operates. He explained:
“Last night, near the time of dawn, I was suddenly bestowed with a special divine grace and an intense spiritual expansion. I knew my own actions had not earned this specific blessing. When I reflected deeply through my heart to discover the source, it was unveiled to me that this young student was awake in his night vigil (Tahajjud). During his prayers, he sincerely remembered me and prayed for me. The divine grace I received was the direct result of his supplication. Therefore, I went to offer him my gratitude.”
The Mystical Reality This story highlights several breathtaking realities of the Irfani path:
The Tangibility of Prayer: For most of us, praying for someone else is a hopeful wish sent into the void. For the spiritually awake, a sincere prayer is a tangible, measurable force. Mirza Javad actually felt the spiritual light hit his soul the moment the student prayed for him.
The Eradication of Spiritual Pride: Despite being a master with hundreds of disciples, Mirza Javad possessed no spiritual arrogance. He freely admitted that he had received a blessing he hadn’t earned, and he humbled himself to physically go and thank a student decades his junior.
The Unseen Web of Souls: It shows that the spiritual realm is deeply interconnected. A quiet tear shed by a young student in a lonely room at 3:00 AM can directly elevate the soul of a master miles away. In the court of the Divine, the sincerity of a beginner can sometimes unlock doors that years of scholarship cannot.
