Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) knew what it meant to experience a dramatic and terrifying change in circumstances. From a life of ultimate privilege as a royal prince in the palaces of Egypt, he suddenly became a fugitive, forced to flee into the desert and face an entirely uncertain future. His commitment to justice and his defence of the oppressed had brought him to a situation where he could no longer rely on the security, wealth, and advantages he had once known.
He arrived in the land of Madyan as a complete stranger. He had no wealth, no family network, no shelter, and no certainty of what lay ahead. Yet, instead of allowing his exhausting circumstances to break his spirit, Musa (AS) turned his heart entirely to Allah.
Sitting in the shade, exhausted and hungry after helping two women water their flocks, he made a profound supplication recorded in the Holy Quran:
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
Rabbi innī līmā anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqīr.
“My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.”
— Quran, Surah al-Qasas, Chapter 28, Verse 24
The Depth of the Supplication
This dua expresses a profound recognition: Allah knows what we need, knows what lies ahead, and is the One whose wisdom and choice ultimately direct our lives. Musa (AS) was not merely asking for a specific, limited solution. He was placing his absolute need before the One who knows the full reality of his situation. He acknowledged that Allah’s wisdom extends far beyond human understanding, and that the goodness he desperately needed might come from a direction he could not yet perceive.
In his monumental exegesis, Tafsir al-Mizan, the great Shia scholar Allamah Tabatabai highlights the sheer vulnerability of Prophet Musa (AS) at this moment. Having been raised on the finest royal food in Pharaoh’s palace, Musa was now so stripped of worldly means that, according to narrations cited in the Tafsir, he was essentially asking Allah for just a piece of bread to eat
Yet, because of his total submission and beautiful reliance on Allah, the response was miraculous. Through this very supplication, Allah granted him far more than bread: He granted him safety, a home, a righteous spouse, and eventually, the mantle of Prophethood
The Ahl al-Bayt (AS) on Surrendering to Allah’s Plan
The Ahl al-Bayt (AS) have continually drawn our attention to this specific verse as a spiritual lifeline for believers facing despair.
Amir al-Mu’minin, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), frequently quoted this very supplication of Prophet Musa
He used it to teach his followers the essence of Tawakkul (trust in God)—that a believer does not dictate to Allah how their problems should be solved, but rather opens their hands to whatever “good” (Khayr) the Almighty chooses to send, knowing that Allah’s choice is always superior to our own limited planning.
When we reach a point of such confusion, anxiety, and exhaustion that we can hardly see how to move forward, this verse becomes a powerful remedy. In the Shia hadith collection Al-Mahasin, it is narrated that Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS) specifically recommended reciting this verse of Prophet Musa when a person feels trapped, helpless, or overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, and sadness.
It is a spiritual anchor when the storms of life threaten to pull us under.
Similarly, Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) taught that this Quranic verse is highly effective for seeking sustenance (rizq) and ease in difficult affairs
When our plans collapse—whether in our careers, marriages, or personal goals—and our options seem entirely uncertain, we are taught to echo the words of Musa (AS).
Reconnecting, Not Giving Up
There is a crucial lesson here for our modern lives. Turning to Allah with this supplication is not giving up. It is not an abandonment of effort. Rather, it is the act of reconnecting with the Divine when our own ability to chart the way forward has reached its absolute limits.
We continue to make the halal efforts we can, just as Musa (AS) made the effort to help the women at the well and seek shade. But we do not arrogantly imagine that our limited understanding must determine the outcome. We entrust our affairs to Allah, ask Him to guide our choices, and remain completely open to the goodness He sends.
When you feel overwhelmed, when your carefully laid plans have collapsed, or when you cannot see a clear path ahead, let the words of Prophet Musa (AS) remind you:
“My Lord, I do not know everything I need. You know. I am in absolute need of whatever goodness You choose to send me.”
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
The path forward is rarely a straight line that we can draw ourselves. Sometimes, it is a path illuminated only by the light of our sincere submission to the Lord of the Worlds. When the way forward is hidden, the door to Allah’s infinite mercy is wide open.
